Your day will begin as you meet your guide and prepare for the thrilling ride down the Lower Portal Road ? the only road to the base of Hoover Dam. As you drop 1100 feet in elevation, the mighty face of the dam presents itself. Here you will unload boats and equipment for your journey through Black Canyon. After a short safety briefing along with some basic paddling instruction, we will help you into your boat.

Your first stop will be Sauna Cave; an exploratory cave dug by the Bureau of Reclamation before they built the Hoover Dam. Check out the minerals in the back, or perhaps sweat out the pitcher of margaritas you drank last night. Either way, the cool dip in the river on the way out is sure to awaken your senses.

Throughout the day your expert guide will stop and show you unique and hidden places such as Gold Strike Canyon, Lone Palm Canyon, Emerald Cave, and many other treats.

Your guide will inform you of the historical significance of many river features and about the wildlife that inhabits the area. Some creatures you may see are Big Horn Sheep, Bald Eagles, Coyotes, Red Tail hawks, Turkey Vultures, and more.

One other very popular attraction along the river is the many natural hot springs and hot waterfalls that hide in the slot canyons. Be sure to wear a bathing suit or something to wear while sitting in the mineral tubs. They contain many natural minerals, and the healing properties are well documented. This is the same type of treatment people pay big bucks for in the Las Vegas spas. Here, in the privacy of Black Canyon, you get your own natural hot spring - absolutely free! You will have ample time to enjoy a relaxing soak while on your scenic journey.

Your day will also include a nice picnic lunch on a secluded beach or rock that will provide you with million dollar views and great company. This entire experience is one that will leave you wanting more and more. It is one of the most striking yet peaceful places on Earth, and to think it is only 30 minutes from Las Vegas! Your trip ends at Willow Beach, Arizona, where an air conditioned shuttle vehicle will meet you to take you back to your hotel on the Las Vegas Strip. You will arrive back at your hotel on the Strip at approximately 5-6 PM.

Includes:

Transportation to and from the Las Vegas Strip.
Professional guide certified in first aid and CPR.
Basic paddling instruction and safety briefing.
All equipment such as PFD, paddle, and dry bag.
Bottled water, snacks, and lunch.

FAQ

I don't know how to swim. Will I be okay?
Most of the day you will be sitting in your kayak, enjoying the river. Nature however, is unpredictable, and there is always the possibility of flipping your boat. We provide you with a modern PFD (personal flotation device) that will keep you afloat should you go in the "drink". Our guides are professionals, fully trained in rescue techniques, as well as CPR and First Aid. They know how to read currents, keep you upright, and bail you out if the need arises. You are in good hands.

Will I get wet?
Yes, you will get wet; at least your feet (sometimes more). The river is 54F year-round. The cold waters are nice in the summer, but unless you want to become part of the polar bear club, too cold for swimming during winter months. We give you a dry bag so you can bring extra socks, shirts, jacket, or whatever.

What should I bring/wear?
< In summer: Shorts and tee shirts, along with a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses. Wear a bathing suit under layers of clothing. Be sure to wear a river shoe or sandal that can get wet, but can still be hiked in. In Winter: Bathing suit under long sleeves and pants. Cotton tends to retain water, so in winter months fleece or synthetic material is best. Nylon, polyester, capilene, and polypropylene work wonders. A light fleece jacket keeps you warm after soaking, and wool socks keep your wet feet warm in your kayak. A ski-type beanie or hat that covers your ears is oh-so-nice and a light pair of gloves will keep your digits warm and toasty. We will supply paddling jackets in chilly weather. Bring sunglasses. Water shoes or Teva type sandals will be fine.

Can I bring my children?
We recommend that children be at least 10 years old, and paddle in a tandem kayak with an adult. Your guide may rearrange people throughout the day if some of the group is struggling. If you feel you can paddle for two, well, we won't stop you. Just remember, it is 11 ½ miles.

Do you supply alcohol? May we bring our own?
Unfortunately, the answer to both of these is no. Safety is our main concern. We have a spotless record, and we want to keep it that way. Combining tourists who aren't used to desert temperatures of 120F with miles of paddling usually equals dehydration. Mix alcohol into that equation, and it gets dangerous quickly.

Do I need to get a permit first?
Yes. This trip is so scenic and popular, that they limit the # of boats allowed on the river daily. Before making a reservation, you must simply call and obtain a permit. It is one simple step (702)-293-8204.

What time will I get done?
We pick you up from your hotel at 7:00 AM for all trips. These times are approximate based on traffic and other unforeseen events. You will be tired, sunburned, and ready for a margarita when you get back. Have one, you deserve it!
