Ely to Keystone Nevada Train Ride - Monday through Thursday
The best preserved short line railroad in America Take the Ely to Keystone train ride. Built in 1905 & 1906, it is a portal back in time. Marvel in the rich history of the best preserved short line rairoad left in America. Explore the facility, experience railroading from the last century. It smells of coal smoke, creosote, & sweat. Locomotives whistle off & cars clang as they couple together. The Wheels squeal as the locomotive is turned. At other times it's eerily quiet, where the only noise is the wind & the hooting of the owl that lives in the coal tower. Experience what it took to move a mountain of coal. **Museum admission is included in the cost of the train ride PLEASE NOTE: Steam locomotives are replaced by diesel locomotives during November. Museum Info Often called the "best preserved" shortline in North America, the Nevada Northern was one of the last great mining railroads built in the early 20th century, carrying millions of tons of copper ore from Ely mines. After cessation of railroad operations in 1983, it was donated to the non-profit White Pine Historical Railroad Foundation to operate as a working railroad museum. Two excursion routes are operated; each trip is about 1.5 hours. The Keystone route travels around downtown Ely, then passes through tunnel No. 1 - one of the few curved tunnels in the world and up scenic Robinson Canyon towards the mines. There are also trips on the scenic Adverse "Hiline" route through the Steptoe Valley and towards the former mill and smelter. Exhibits Complete railroad facilities including over 30 buildings, steam and diesel locomotives, and over 70 pieces of rolling stock. Guided walking tours of the railroad facility are offered daily. Exhibits include the general offices, depot and dispatcher's office - which all appear as they did when the facility opened in 1907. Also tour the roundhouse, machine shop and blacksmith shop and view the historic rolling stock of steam, diesel and electric locomotives and turn-of-the-century passenger and freight cars. An absolutely authentic collection of railroad equipment from one of the west's last great mining camps. Tour does not include hotel pick up or drop off.
